במהלך סוף ינואר מקיימים ארגונים פמיניסטיים וארגונים לחינוך מיני דיונים בקמפוסים ברחבי ארה"ב בכל הנוגע לסכנה שבקידום תכניות "הינזרות ממין עד החתונה" כתחליף לחינוך מיני ומניעת הדבקה באיידס בקרב צעירים. הדחיפות לקיום הדיונים עלתה בעקבות ממצאים מדאיגים שפורסמו על ידי המרכז לבקרת מחלות האמריקאי (ה-CDC), לפיהם בין השנים 2005 ל-2006 חלה עליה של 3% במקרי ההריונות הלא-רצויים בקרב בני נוער. מדובר בשינוי ברור של המגמה שאפיינה את השנים האחרונות, והיא הסנונית הראשונה, לפי ארגונים אלה, המבשרת את חוסר יעילותן של תכניות החינוך המיני האידיאולוגיות-שמרניות, המטיפות להינזרות מסקס עד לחתונה. תכניות ההינזרות תופסות בשנות כהונתו של בוש מקום יותר ויותר מרכזי וכיום מהוות כ-33% מסך התקציב הממשלתי המופנה למניעת התפשטות מגפת האיידס. לטענת הארגונים המקיימים את סדרת הדיונים האלה, מדיניות ההינזרות מלבה סטריאוטיפים כלפי נשים, לוחצת אותן אל הקיר בכל מה שקשור להעצמתן ואחריותן לדאוג לאמצעי מניעה ובטווח הארוך מסכנת את בריאותן ומעלה את הסיכוי להדבקה במחלות מין, ביניהן איידס. קביעה זו נאמרת גם על סמך לא מעט מחקרים שנערכו בנושא, לפיהם תכניות ההינזרות המתקיימות בבתי הספר או מחוץ לו, אינן תורמות לשינוי חיובי בהתנהגות המינית של צעירים ואינה מורידה את שיעורי קיום יחסי המין הסיכוניים. במילים אחרות – תכניות ההינזרות מסקס עד החתונה מנסה לעקוף את בעיית ההתנהגות המינית הסיכונית בקרב צעירים ולא מתמודדת באופן אמיץ ויעיל עם הסוגיה עצמה.
